Join Dorian Cozens (Game Design and Development Lecturer and Course Leader at City College Norwich) for a deep dive into the cultural overlap between Warhammer 40K and British heavy metal, exploring their shared aesthetics, themes, and impact on identity formation.
This talk will explore the deep and enduring connections between these two subcultures. From the gothic dystopian artwork of Warhammer 40K to the thunderous soundscapes of bands like Bolt Thrower, this session will examine how the grimdark ethos of the game aligns with the themes of rebellion, power, and mythology found in heavy metal music.
We’ll look at how both communities shape identity, foster creativity, and maintain a sense of belonging through shared aesthetics, narratives, and iconography.
Expect discussions on visual and musical influences, the evolution of Warhammer’s representation in metal culture, and how fans engage with both mediums to express their identities.
The talk will conclude with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to share their thoughts and experiences at the intersection of these two dynamic worlds.
