This talk examines the key roles within game audio, with a particular focus on the demand for technically driven positions such as audio programmers. It explores how educators and parents can effectively support emerging talent, guiding learners from school age through further and higher education and into professional practice.

Informed by current industry insight, the session highlights accessible, free tools and clear learning pathways that help demystify technical game audio, empowering the next generation to develop both confidence and technical proficiency.

The Auditorium, The Forum

Steven Coltart is a British composer, audio lead, technical music designer, and educator whose work spans video games, film, television, and immersive media. Based between Norfolk and London, he is recognised for emotionally driven, cinematic soundtracks that combine orchestral and electronic elements with strong technical expertise and narrative focus. During his time as Head of Audio at Maze Theory, Steven led creative direction and technical delivery across platforms, including PSVR2, Meta Quest, and Steam VR, contributing to titles such as Infinite Inside (2024) and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow (2025). In November 2025, he began freelancing with the Sony PlayStation Studios Creative Arts Music team.

Alongside his industry practice, Steven brings over 15 years of experience in further and higher education. He has previously served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, where he developed and led the Composition for Film and Games degree, acted as Head of Games at Norwich University of the Arts, and currently teaches Unreal Engine and audio middleware–focused content within the Games department at West Suffolk College (Eastern Education Group).
